Connect with students

Open House Melbourne has launched Open Studio, a curated program of studio visits designed to connect students with leading built environment, planning and landscape practices.

This initiative provides an invaluable opportunity for students across disciplines—including architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, urban design, and property development—to gain first-hand insight into professional practice, through the presentation of real time projects, see how a practice operates and what role a graduate plays within a practice.

For many students, after graduation, they have not stepped foot in a practice, large or small. By stepping into studios and engaging directly with practitioners, students will experience what a future career in the industry might look like.

Program format

Each Open Studio session will immerse students in the daily workings of a practice through real-time and past projects, offering a tangible understanding of workflows, problem-solving approaches, and collaborative dynamics.

The suggested session format involves graduate team members and senior colleagues sharing their experiences, guiding students through project presentations that highlight key tasks, methodologies, and challenges faced in practice. After these presentations, a structured Q&A session will allow students to engage directly with professionals, fostering meaningful discussions about career pathways, skill development, and industry expectations. The session will conclude with a networking opportunity, encouraging connections not only between students and professionals but also among the student cohort itself.

It’s recommended an Open Studio goes for 1.5–2 hours, as an afternoon event (the best time to engage busy students!)

Be part of Open Studio

To ensure the program is as beneficial as possible, Open House Melbourne needs support from outstanding practices.

Our team will work closely with universities and participating practices to align visits with student availability and learning needs. Scheduled monthly throughout the academic year, these sessions will serve as an important bridge between education and industry, helping to shape the next generation of professionals.

By offering a diverse selection of studios and disciplines, Open Studio aims to provide a well-rounded view of career possibilities within the built environment sector.
