Building Description

There has been a Library building at the heart of the historic civic precinct in central Bendigo since 1955. In 2014 the library launched a renewed design, by MGS Architects, with the aim of creating a 21st century library space, expanding community use and reactivating this important community and civic asset. The new generation Bendigo Library was a partnership between City of Greater Bendigo, Goldfields Library Corporation and the Victorian Government. There are informal, playful spaces where people gather and socialise; access to state of the art technology and free wifi; and beautifully appointed serious spaces that house the precious collections, including a heritage archive that celebrates the important role that Bendigo has played in Victoria’s development. The building spaces flow, and are linked by an internal street with views that open onto areas inviting people to explore and participate. The redesign won the ‘Victorian AIA Awards 2014 – Regional Prize’, and was commended in the ‘Victorian AIA Awards 2014 – Public Buildings’ category.
