Building Description

The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts at Monash Clayton is a truly contemporary facility comprising three state-of-the art live performance venues. The Alexander Theatre is its largest venue and a significant foundational building of Monash University. The Theatre’s recent refurbishment retains the building’s original foundations and architectural ambitions. Its proscenium theatre is now the first in Australia to install a Meyer Sound Constellation active acoustic system, which enables digitally adjusted acoustics to suit a wide range of performances otherwise not possible in a theatre originally designed for the spoken word. Along with the 586-seat Theatre, two dynamic new venues complete the Centre. The 130-seat Sound Gallery with its emphasis on intimacy and active acoustic system is ideal for a wide range of performances from chamber music through to experimental ensembles. It is complemented by the Jazz Club, a live music venue functioning as a cafe service during the day and a fully catered venue at night. Opening to a generous outdoor terrace it has a capacity for up to 200 guests. These venues herald a new era for the performing arts in Melbourne’s south-east by providing world-class facilities for international standard professional productions, students and local community groups.
