The outdoor courtyard at Collingwood Yards, with leafy London plane trees surrounded by red-brick buildings. People are gathered around long wooden tables under a large leafy tree, while others walk or chat nearby. Bicycles are parked along the edge, and the space has a relaxed, community atmosphere on a bright sunny day.

Description

Collingwood Yards is a not-for-profit arts precinct open for everyone to explore. Originally built in 1913 as the Collingwood Technical School, the site was transformed by architects Fieldwork and is now an incubator for Victoria’s creative community. The precinct is home to artists, galleries, cultural organisations, restaurants, bars, retail stores, and offices.

Collingwood Yards is independent and operates a unique cross-subsidy model using commercial rent income to subsidise affordable spaces for 15 studio artists and over 20 not-for-profit cultural organisations.

The precinct is also home to the Keith Haring Mural, the artist’s only remaining large-scale public artwork in Australia. Collingwood Yards conserves the heritage-listed artwork and continues Haring’s ethos of “art for everyone” through arts programming and community events.

What's On

Explore Collingwood Yards through guided tours sharing the precinct’s history, design, and ethos. Gain behind-the-scenes peeks of artist studios and visit leading galleries to discover current exhibitions.

Either before or after the tour, you can head to CY Venue to hear a robust panel discussing how to safeguard affordable creative spaces in rapidly changing areas, exploring the possible opportunities and challenges collaborating with the private sector.

The panel will feature Dr Kate Shaw, University of Melbourne Honorary Research Fellow in Urban Geography & Planning; Jeff Provan, Neometro founder and Gertrude Contemporary board member; Quino Holland, director at Fieldwork; Kate Beynon, artist; and Zoe Rinkel, Collingwood Yards CEO.

There will also be open access to the precinct for you to explore at your own time and pace.
