Nestled in Victoria's Latrobe Valley on the Traditional Lands of the Brayakaulung people of the Gunaikurnai nation, Yallourn Power Station—or simply Yallourn—has provided both the state and nation with electricity since the 1920s.

The current plant, opened in 1974, is powered by brown coal produced from Australia's second-largest open cut mine just next door. Every year, around 18 million tonnes of high moisture brown coal is mined to boil water into a superheated steam that drives Yallourn's four massive turbine generators. Together, these turbines produce 1,480 megawatts of electricity an hour—enough to power two million homes.

Today, Yallourn provides 22 per cent of Victoria's electricity, and about eight per cent of Australia's National Electricity Market.

In mid-2028, after 100 years of providing energy to Australian homes and businesses, the Yallourn coal mine and power station will close and we are working hard to develop a plan to transform the site into a landscape the enables ongoing prosperity and amenity for all.

In preparation for Yallourn’s closure, EnergyAustralia is offering the opportunity to peek behind the fence to view the Yallourn Mine and learn what the vision for the future after 2028 will be.

Join a minibus tour of the mine and get a first-hand view of current operations, and learn more about current and future rehabilitation works. The tour will be narrated by someone from the mine rehabilitation team and give you the opportunity to ask questions.
