Architect/Designer: Adaptation of existing building for the Jewish Museum of Australia, opened 1995 (architect not publicly documented)

Description

The Jewish Museum of Australia: Gandel Centre for Judaica has been located at 26 Alma Road for over 30 years in 2025. Nestled within the residential area of St Kilda, the building was originally an office block that was converted and extended to house the Museum and its collection of over 25,000 items.

At the museum, Jewish life is illuminated. At the intersection of art and Jewish culture, the museum is a place for all people to share in the Australian Jewish experience. Through a vibrant calendar of onsite and online exhibitions and events, the Jewish Museum is recognised as one of Australia’s leading community museums.

Celebrating global Jewish excellence and everydayness through an Australian prism, the Museum inspires curiosity, conversation and play—with engagement and connection at its heart. Guided by a strong belief in the power of museums to change lives, the Museum team creates world-class exhibitions and events that give voice to the stories of a diverse community and promote social cohesion.

What's On

Come explore the Jewish Museum of Australia through guided and self-guided access to selected gallery, education and community spaces. Staff and volunteers will be on site to share insights into the building’s adaptation for museum use, its role within the local community, and how the Museum supports contemporary exhibitions alongside education and public programs.

Visitors can expect to learn about the Museum’s history, its evolving approach to exhibition design, and the ways the building functions as both a cultural institution and a gathering place. Informal talks and opportunities for conversation will be available throughout the day, with time for questions and reflection. Additional interpretive materials will be provided to support independent exploration.

We are committed to providing opportunities for all members of the community to experience our Museum. We have worked to ensure our exhibitions, events and education programs are as accessible as possible for people with restricted mobility. Yet, due to the age and restrictions that exist within our building, some parts of our venue have limited access. These areas include our front entrance and lift. The Museum has disability-access toilets on the ground floor.

When visiting the Museum, we ask you to please take into account the following:

Building Access

The front entrance of the Museum has steps. Visitors with restricted mobility, including those using wheelchairs, can access the building via our schools’ entrance at rear. Please ring the Museum ahead of your visit and we can assist to organise access.

Lift

Our passenger lift has the following dimensions: (approx.) 900mm (wide) x 1200mm (deep). We appreciate the lift may not fit all sizes of wheelchairs and apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused. Should there be any difficulty in accessing lift control buttons or any aspect of our accessibility, our team are always nearby to assist.

Future Plans

The Museum is currently planning an upgrade to our forecourt, including a new wheelchair accessible ramp. We place great importance on improving our accessibility so that all members of the community can share in the Australian Jewish story.

If you would like to discuss the accessibility of our venue, please contact a member of our Experience and Facilities team on +61 3 8534 3600.
