Square Metre Community Gardening: How to Turn Waste into Veggies in an Apartment
+ Add to ItineraryDescription
We can't live in high density housing without thinking about where our waste goes. Our group runs workshops and working bees on four community gardens across South Melbourne and Port Melbourne, 100% accessible to anyone, where we turn household organic waste into fresh produce for local communities via gardening. Over the past 10 years, we've composted over 30 tons of local organic waste into produce, via worm farms and an anaerobic process called bokashi. We run workshops teaching locals how to take charge of their own sustainability and circular economies.
What's On
Walk through Port Melbourne and South Melbourne to see our raised garden beds where we turn compost into fresh produce.
On Saturday, come learn about the practicalities of household composting, particularly for apartment dwellers, and the importance of groups like ours in creating community in high density living.
Kids can attend our seed planting workshop on Sunday, learn how to grow seeds at home, and perhaps even bring seedlings back to plant later in the season.
We want to show people how easy it is to connect with this system, reducing their own contribution to large scale waste systems like Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) and landfill, and instead turn their organic waste into dinner.
While you're in the area, visit our other local public community gardens at HH Skinner Reserve (South Melbourne), Lyell Iffla Reserve (South Melbourne) and Centenary Park (Port Melbourne) are open to the public 24/7.
Children's Activities
Kids are welcome with their adults at both events but Sunday’s workshop is specifically for them! Bring an egg carton if you have one.
