Building Description

The Dock community precinct incorporates the Library at The Dock, Buluk Park and the Community Hub at the Dock. The built form is inspired and shaped by its historic wharf and industrial maritime setting. The Library at the Dock is an award-winning and sustainable community building situated on the Victoria Harbour waterfront in Docklands. The first building in Australia to be built using cross-laminated timber, it was also the first Australian public building to be awarded a six star Green Star rating. This three-storey library and community centre was delivered through a tri-partnership between Lend Lease, the City of Melbourne and Places Victoria and is a reflection of the local community’s aspiration for a civic heart in Docklands. Library at The Dock offers an eclectic mix to suit the needs of the local community, workers and visitors to Docklands. In addition to library collection, there is a café, meeting areas, a recording studio, a makerspace, community spaces and a large performance venue. A gallery space celebrates community achievements and Docklands’ rich heritage. Next door is the Community Hub at The Dock, a community facility for boating enthusiasts and for families to access a range of services. The building features a boating hub on the ground floor – home to the Docklands Yacht Club, Dragon Boat Victoria and the Melbourne Outrigger Canoe club. On the second floor are maternal and child health services, terraces for playgroups, monthly immunisation sessions and counselling. A large multipurpose room for community workshops is also upstairs.
