MIRVAC: 664 Collins St
Architect: Grimshaw, 2018
Docklands | D01
Building Description
Conceived as part of the original Southern Cross Station master plan, 664 Collins Street is a unique commercial building on top of Melbourne’s major transport hub.
Located specifically above Southern Cross Station’s platforms 13 to 16, upon a 200m-long concrete deck raised 15m above the rail corridor, the landmark office tower traverses the length of the rail environment between Bourke Street and Collins Street, in effect creating a new city block within Melbourne’s Docklands precinct.
Sitting immediately above active train and freight lines, key components of 664 Collins Street had to be pre-fabricated and assembled on site late at night to minimise disruption to the train network, which was in operation during construction.
Making use of an over-rail air-rights site, 664 Collins Street eliminates the requirement for further land use or vertical development in the City of Melbourne. Targeting a 5-Star Green Star and 5-star NABERS certification, it features one of the largest rooftop solar arrays in Melbourne – 180kW which will offset the building’s base consumption.
The design for 664 Collins Street delivers beyond the specification for an A Grade office and, through the incorporation of the new public walkway, offers a unique vista of the undulating roofscape of Southern Cross Station, seeking to enhance the public realm in a quintessentially Melbourne way.
What's On

Visitors will be taken on a tour of the building’s public areas culminating in the screening of two short films on the largest internal LED screen in Australia.
