Building Description

Far from losing their relevance, libraries as community and knowledge hubs are as relevant as ever. Built in 2012, this vibrant public library is a best-practice knowledge and built environment and an integral part of its urban context. The library features shelf space for books and magazines, gallery space, meeting rooms, children’s room, a dedicated Heritage room for family and local history research, and specialist digital equipment.

Williamstown’s maritime heritage is reflected in the building’s architecture such as the curved wooden form, the extensive use of wood, and a translucent polycarbonate that creates a calm and airy ambiance. Strong environmentally sustainable design (ESD) solutions are integrated into the building fabric through thoughtful configuration and zoning of spaces, and the integration of a multi-stage hybrid HVAC system to balance occupant comfort with energy efficiency.

Designed by Sally Draper Architects and Mitsuori Architects, the Williamstown Library Redevelopment received a commendation for Urban Design at the 2014 Victorian Architecture Awards.

What's On

The library is open to the general public during library opening hours. 30 minute guided tours are available on Saturday at 10.30am and 11.30am and on Sunday at 2.30pm and 3.30pm.
