Coonawarra Willam Aquatic Centre—Ivanhoe Grammar School
+ Add to ItineraryDescription
The Coonawarra Willam Aquatic Centre was conceived to address the need for an integrated aquatic centre and learning facility within a school campus, supporting both educational and community use.
The design brief called for a cohesive, culturally respectful environment to promote physical and mental well-being while enriching learning outcomes. Key challenges included spatial constraints, sustainability targets, and maintaining school operations during construction.
Through early stakeholder engagement and thoughtful planning, the design strategically positioned pools for solar gain, embedded flexible learning hubs, and incorporated passive design strategies, solar energy, and rainwater harvesting. The result is a sustainable, inclusive facility that celebrates Indigenous identity, supports interdisciplinary wellness education, and redefines how sport, learning, and culture can meaningfully coexist.
