Density Done Well

+ Add to Itinerary

Presented by: Housing Committee of the Victorian Chapter of the AIA

Description

Population projections call for over 2 million new homes across Victoria in the next 30 years. Denser housing models of all types, and homes that are well designed and connected to daily needs, are required to address this challenge.

Planning reform is promoting increased density, in a range of scales and types, across all of Melbourne and yet liveable homes, places and neighbourhoods will not flow from planning reform alone.

What does good density look like? What are the attributes that help build community and add to our neighbourhoods? A comprehensive solution to the housing crisis demands the centring of good design—which brings us to Density Done Well.

The Housing Committee of the Victorian chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects has collected diverse housing projects from across Victoria that demonstrate successful approaches to housing density. Only well-designed denser housing models, combined with good urban design, offer a pathway to increased supply within our cities and towns with improved amenity, employment opportunities, and public realm benefits.

What's On

This exhibition was originally presented to state and local politicians, policy makers and developers in late 2025 at Parliament House.

The exhibition puts forward examples of good design across a variety of densities to help illustrate to residents and politicians alike what we should be aspiring to in order to ensure good outcomes for our cities, our precincts, and our neighbourhoods.
