Architect/Designer: Collaboration (led by Lyons Architects) between First Nations architect Jefa Greenaway of Greenaway Architects, Lyons + Sam Hunter of Architecture Associates 2024

Description

The Koorie Heritage Trust has expanded to occupy all three levels of the Birrarung Building at Fed Square. This has created a stand-alone and independent First Peoples arts and cultural centre—a first of its kind in an Australian capital city.

KHT has worked extensively with a design collaboration (led by Lyons Architects) between First Nations architect Jefa Greenaway of Greenaway Architects, Lyons and Sam Hunter of Architecture Associates, to develop a considered and beautiful plan for the interior design and fitout that reflects Country and place, and which responds in a culturally sensitive way to both organisational and First Peoples community needs, values and aspirations.

What's On

Explore our award-winning interior, find out about the design meaning, view our exhibitions and peek into our vast collection of cultural objects.

Join one of our experienced First Peoples guides to explore our building, collection and exhibitions. Exhibitions running will be paintings by Uncle Ray Thomas, and an immersive audio visual installation occupation studies: ngayanhurra bayarral Birrarung (they tried to tame Birrarung) by Tahlia Palmer & Jasper Cohen-Hunter. Learn about the design elements of our building, the way the space is used as a cultural hub and why our place on the Birrarung is so significant. We will have video from the architects also playing in our Moogji Lounge.

Children's Activities

Kids will have the opportunity to make a badge about their visit to KHT.
