Architect/Designer: Foolscap, Melanie Katsalidis, Pieces of Eight, Liam Fleming 2023

Description

Located within Melbourne’s creative core, Pieces of Eight Gallery is a space defined by its commitment to contemporary craft, material exploration and refined, intimate design.

Originally conceived through a collaboration between jeweller Melanie Katsalidis and interior architect Adele Winteridge of Foolscap, the gallery reflects a shared sensibility—one that balances precision with tactility, and minimalism with moments of surprise. The interior is deliberately restrained, allowing the materiality and detail of each object to take precedence, while subtle architectural gestures create a calm, immersive environment for visitors.

What's On

Experience a special installation of eight limited-edition hand-blown glass vases, created by glass artist Liam Fleming in collaboration with Foolscap and Melanie Katsalidis. The display offers a close look at how reclaimed glass offcuts are transformed into abstract, sculptural vessels, each piece defined by its own composition of clear and vividly coloured fragments.

Bringing together architecture, craft and sustainability, each piece is formed from clear glass embedded with reclaimed coloured offcuts—fragments that would otherwise be discarded. Suspended within each vessel, these raw, jagged inclusions evoke fractured stained-glass windows, ensuring every vase is entirely unique.

This installation highlights the potential of reuse as both a design driver and a narrative device. It speaks to a broader ethos of generosity, not only in the sharing of ideas and collaboration between disciplines, but in the reconsideration of materials typically overlooked.

Engage with the process behind the work, gaining insight into material reuse, glassmaking techniques and the role of collaboration across disciplines. A public talk featuring Melanie and Adele will further unpack their creative partnership, the thinking behind the gallery’s design, and how ideas of generosity, sustainability and craft are embedded within both the objects and the space.

Alongside the installation, visitors are invited to explore the gallery at their own pace, observing the interplay between object and interior, and discovering how contemporary craft practices can reframe discarded materials into considered, enduring works.
