Victorian Pride Centre
+ Add to ItineraryDescription
The Victorian Pride Centre (VPC) is Australia's first and only purpose-built centre for LGBTIQA+ communities, sitting proudly on Fitzroy Street in the heart of St Kilda, a suburb with a rich and storied queer history.
Designed by Melbourne architects Brearley Architects & Urbanists and Grant Amon Architects following an open design competition in 2018, the building is as thoughtfully considered as it is visually striking. The design draws on St Kilda's own exuberant architectural DNA—Luna Park, dance halls, the Esplanade vaults—reimagined into something entirely new.
Take a peek into the dramatic elliptical atrium that was deliberately left partially unfinished, as the building is designed to evolve alongside the community it serves.
Winner of the 2023 Victorian Premier's Design Award of the Year, the VPC is widely recognised as a landmark of queer architecture and one of the most important community buildings constructed in Australia in decades. Whether you're an architecture enthusiast, a history buff, a community member, or simply curious, this is a rare chance to step inside a building unlike anything else in Australia—one that was built not just to house organisations, but to reflect, celebrate, and champion a community.
What's On
Step inside one of Melbourne's most architecturally distinctive and culturally significant buildings on a guided tour led by the Victorian Pride Centre's knowledgeable volunteers and staff. Throughout the hour, look at a building that pulses with community life.
Home to LGBTIQA+ organisations, creative spaces, and cultural institutions including the Australian Queer Archives, Joy FM radio, a theatrette, gallery, bookshop, and more. Walk through the building's remarkable design story, from its striking tubular concrete façade to the soaring central atrium, and learn about what it means to have a space like this in the heart of St Kilda.
