Beneath Fed Square, a vast network of criss-crossing tunnels and trenches serve an equally vast variety of functions. This is the venue for our Underground Pop-Up Experience, part of our fabulous Anything But Square Festival celebrating Melbourne’ arts culture and the unique features of iconic and loved space! An environmentally-friendly, automatic heating and cooling system sits below Fed Square’s Atrium, pumping air fresh off the surface of the Yarra into and out of the space according to temperature. Elsewhere, springy buffers absorb the shockwaves of trains passing beneath the square. You can’t feel it at all topside, but beneath the earth the rumble of passing trains is earth-shaking and incredible to experience. There’s a whole ecosystem of abandoned building projects, arcane and obscure plans, half-stocked restaurants that never were and more just dying to be discovered beneath Fed Square! Ticket sales to the Underground Pop-Up Experience won’t be open to the public until after Open House Melbourne – so now’s your chance to be the first-ever to experience this extraordinary exhibition.
