Keeping House: Secure Homes For Women

Keeping House: Secure Homes For Women

Learn about these real-world examples of innovative housing models, at a time when accessing a well-designed and affordable home remains a critical issue for Victorian women.

In April 2022 we held an in-person illustrated talk at Melbourne School of Design, presenting real world examples of innovative housing models for women and women-led households. In partnership with non-for-profit community housing provider Women’s Property Initiatives, this evening of presentations unpacked the complex web of economic, political and cultural forces in Victoria that impact access to affordable, safe and secure homes.

A digital edit of the event also screened as part of the Open House Worldwide Festival, along with live virtual tours and talks from London, New York, Colombo, Taiwan, Vienna, Valencia, Montpellier and more across the globe. The 12-hour broadcast raised critical debates about the future of housing with contributions from residents and architects that are reshaping bold housing estates and neighbourhoods.

Catch up on our condensed digital version of the event with a presentation from WPI’s CEO Jeanette Large on the current women’s housing crisis; illustrated talks from Mel Bright, director of Studio Bright and Sophie Dyring, director of Schored Projects on their respective social housing projects with WPI; and a panel conversation with these presenters plus WPI’s development manager Natasha Liddell, and moderated by Tania Davidge, OHM Building Council member, architect, writer, researcher and co-founder of the architectural research practice, OoPLA.
